ah, so the problems are probably coming from your xin-mo board. You will need to update your kernel. Check out this thead:

[Solved] Xin-Mo Speed joystick in game and menu
Its a kernel bug. Piplay does not have full support of xinmo. take a look at http://piplay.org/forum/discussion/1840/another-xin-mo-question-mutliple-button-presses#Item_7 to get and install my patched kernbel from raspicade.

I think that your controller is not getting initialized properly. I just tested (initialized right/wrong). I was able to duplicate your problem, as well fix it with this solution: http://pimame.org/forum/discussion/1735/bugs-in-8-beta-9#Item_6

ROMs work on Windows version of mame but not on pi play.
The various Pi versions of Mame all use different older mame sets.

The solutions are to download the proper rom version for each emulator or run the roms you have through clrmame so that they can be renamed…

PiPlay 0.8 Beta 8 Testers Wanted (Not for faint of heart)
you have to download the images and put them into your /path/to/roms/emulator_name/images folder

check the end of this post for a link to the images.
