You can give a try to my distro and see if you have the same problem with it. 1942 is running well in cocktail mode : https://sourceforge.net/projects/raspicade/

You should edit the /var/lib/alsa/asound.state file as I do in my conf script for raspicade : https://github.com/ian57/Raspicade-configuration-files/blob/master/piaudioconf.sh

Hiding Linux boot text
Check my raspicade documentation : you can send all text output to console 2, as you are using console 1 at boot : main advantage you can check in case of errors by pressing ALT-F2 to see console text. everything is done by cmdline.txt file -> so…

Anyone working with coin acceptors?
I've done that on my Jeutel with the IPAC encoder, but you can wire the coin switch the same way to the GPIO : http://www.morere.eu/spip.php?article168#outil_sommaire_46

Perhaps you can try my raspicade distro : just put some games in directories and display_rotate=1 in config.txt file to see if you have same issue... Just one more question : is you PI made in UK?

It depends ;)... If it is a xin-mo, you will have trouble with the second player if piplay does not include some specific patch for this encoder. (raspicade does :)). Connecting to GPIO with a retrogame program gives normally good results.
