one Button for ESC
When you run the controller setup program, usually the last control to map a key to will say "Exit Program." This is where you choose a button on the controller to act as the ESC key and exit from the emulator back to PiPlay

Gameboy Advance ROM Format?
I believe there should just be 1 .gba file per rom.Maybe try a different program (maybe 7-zip?) to unzip them?

PCSX aspect/ screensize?
That did it! I had to find the hidden menu for my tv but I was able to bring the overscan down horizontally and vertically and that fixed the image. Thanks ! Wouldn't have thought to look for that without your suggestion

I took the stock animation and sped it up to 12 seconds and still works fine. Maybe 10 seconds is possible?

Found it! The saves are stored in a hidden folder ".pcsx" The full path is /home/pi/pimame/emulators/pcsx_rearmed/.pcsx
