n00b question - why are some emulators not active?

I decided to dust off my RPI and try to use it as a MAME box for a summer project with my son.
I just downloaded the latest build - 0.8.0 b3 - and installed it.
when I boot it, only some emulators are active in the menu. For example, Mame4All and AdvMAME are both greyed out.
I ssh into the pi and check config.yml - it is correctly pointing to M4A, M4A is installed, and I can manually launch M4A. So why does it appear greyed out in the menu? -
do you have all the bios files in the right folders? if not, you should put them in and try again, it may be the problem.

it's because there aren't any game files uploaded. Upload a game or two and it becomes active.
