maybe, but maybe not. can't tell from lack of details. are you using hdmi? if so, make sure you turn your monitor on before turning on your pi. If you do it the other way, sometimes your pi doesn't get the message to switch to video.

[SOLVED] Mame4All and Advmame "bin files missing"
A few things that other users have reported to work for them: 1) remove any brackets and weird formatting from rom filename 2) check your ownership and permissions for the files. These can cause weird behavior with roms.

what is the error number that shows with filezilla? I'm guessing that you probably need to set ownership of the folder that you are trying to write to, but the error number can confirm that.
