View output from gpio

Hi,
I want to build a piplay cocktail table.
I've bought some happa buttons and 2 joysticks.
I have wired the buttons directly to the gpio pins, I think this will work ?
Is there away to view the signal sent when I push a button ? When I push the tab button and start to configure what keys do what none of the buttons or joysticks are detected ?
If someone knows of a complete how to that would be useful too.
