In-Mame system volume adjustment

I have mame set to Kiosk mode and no volume pot on the amplifier, can anyone reccomend a way to implement a system level "listener" for a key combo that turns the system volume up and down?
The rom by rom vol controls are awful and often dont work -
you could add some buttons to your gpio and modify the adafruit retrogame code to send volume signals instead of keystrokes.
