Beta 6 setting up wifi instructions
  • Hi all. Could someone please take the time to explain the steps how to install the wifi using the menu on the new update beta 6? I just need someone to explain the individual steps (questions) that are asked/required during the maunual installation of the wifi. To clarify, I am not always sure what they require when they are asking specific details regarding the wifi settings.
  • I managed to set up wifi in the linux gui using the startx function but when I reboot the Piplay menu still says no network connection?
  • SOLVED - managed to get it working
  • Sorry if I didn't document the WiFi Setup very well. This should answer your questions:

It is completely separate from the desktop GUI wireless setup.

When you run the WiFi setup from the PiPLAY menu, the first thing it will ask you is your WiFi SSID, this is just the name of your WiFi.

The second thing is your password (PSK) which is self explanatory, really. If you don't know it, it is usually on the bottom of your router or on a small card which came with your router.

The third is the encryption protocol, which is a bit trickier. Most newer routers will use CCMP. Older ones generally use TKIP.
CCMP is more secure (supposedly) and is also backwards compatible, so if you don't know, just use TKIP, it'll work for both.

Next is the protocol, either RSN or WPA. To keep it simple:
If you chose CCMP previously, use RSN
If you chose TKIP previously, use WPA

    Hope I helped :D

Thanks so much. I managed to sort it out in the GUI using the startx function but thanks anyways and I'm sure someone else will need this thread.
  • No problem, glad to help :D
