A bit off topic but what would you recommend as a decent linux os for a netbook...?

It depends of your linux skills :
- noob -> ubuntu/mint/fedora
- medium -> debian/slack
- expert -> arch/gentoo

xunbuntu is not bad... with a light desktop. My son used it on an old laptop Acer travelmate 6292 (Core 2 Duo T7300).

Otherwise try debian or lubuntu. They're both light weight and well supported. :D
