Pimame menu joystick controll

Does anyone know how to or know of any links/tutorials how to set up using a joystick to control the pimame menu? I want to minimize my use of the keyboard for my retro arcade machine.

What kind of joystick are you using?

If you are using PiMAME 0.8, then joystick support is built in.

I've built my own arcade machine and I am using a two player arcade button set from ultracabs. I will install pimame 0.8 tonight and see if it works better. Thanks for the advice.
