First thing I would try is a different version of the ROM from another site. There are multiple dumps of MAME roms and some work better than others.
Try both mame4all and advmame. They both have very different compatibility rates and hopefully one ROM might work with either.

Another option if the above doesn't work is try the Turbografx-16 port.
Just use Google for that ;)
It is very similar to the arcade version but with more features. There is also a Megadrive/Genesis port but it lacks some features.
