If you aren't getting any audio, try this first (type):

 amixer cset numid=2

Where 0=auto, 1=3.5mm jack, 2=hdmi

If that doesn't work, you should update by typing the following:

 sudo apt-get update
 sudo apt-get upgrade
 sudo apt-get install alsa-utils
 sudo modprobe snd_bcm2835
