GPIO or USB?

Is using the GPIO for controls going to be faster or slower than using a USB interface (I-PAC)?

it varies, but generally speaking, I-PAC will be faster (but a bit more costly). Personally, I liked using gpio simply because it's very easy to troubleshoot.

I'm using GPIO right now on my raspberry pi. It works well.
If I were you, I'd rather I-PAC USB interface. -
I use Xin-Mo, Its good, especially with the new kernel patch in PiMAME. It also uses joystick input over keyboard.
