Cannot start startx

When i start startx from the command line my screen turns black with a big cursor :-(

Could you give a little more information? What type of screen/monitor are you using.
This sounds like the screen resolution doesn't match the monitor resolution.

Thanks Jim for your answer. I installed pimame on a 24 inch wide screen, at that point startx was working. Then i replaced the 24 for a 19 inch monitor and from that moment on it is not working on both monitors.
