NOOB joystick question

I'm new to pi and mame so sorry in advance if this is a stupid question.
I plug in a usb joystick and just expected it to work !?!?
The joystick definitely works as I plug it into my laptop and my joystick tester program works fine.
I think the pi sees the joystick as it appears as /dev/input/js0
But when I go into mame the games will only work with the keyboard.
Anyone got any ideas??

Right now the menu only works with the keyboard. Believe me, joysticks and joystick support are at the top of my list.
