I had a look at the image file and was wondering why it is so big.
I found a couple of things that can be deleted: 600MB /home/pi/pimame/.git/ 455MB WolframEngine in /opt 167MB /home/pi/pimame/emulators/mednafen - src directory! 115MB /usr/share/doc/ - not needed for production 57MB /opt/sonic-pi - live coding engine 57MB /var/cache/apt/ 35MB /var/lib/apt/lists/ 33MB /home/pi/pimame/pimame-menu/themes/slide/background.psd 32MB /opt/vc/src
That's more than 1.5GB of savings right there. Pretty easy.
And I wasn't sure about these:
182MB /usr/lib/jvm/ (oracle java 8), 20MB source.zip there 115MB /home/pi/pimame/emulators/scummvm very big! perhaps "dists" directory can be cleaned? there are a lot of .cpp files there... 76MB /usr/share/icons/gnome 32MB nuoveXT2 24MB webkit-gtk 20MB qt-webkit 32MB /usr/lib/gcc 4MB /opt/minecraft-pi - needs mouse (?)
hey, this is much appreciated. I'll make sure Shea takes a look at this. Some of that is necessary though. The biggest offender (home/pi/pimame/.git/) is used for versioning control. So when you update, it will keep your changes to things like themes, controls, and any custom code you may introduce.
The reason that we include it in the SD card image is because it doesn't change the image size, but if we didn't include it, then your first update would have to download an additional 600MB, which is pretty huge since most people just use a cheap b/g wireless dongle for their raspberry pi.
