I attempted numerous times to configure the joystick buttons for numerous emulators using Controller Setup in the menu tab and have looked at various .cfg files. None of the emulators appear to preserve the defined buttons. Furthermore, I cannot get the joystick recognized by either, AdvMame, Mame4All, or NES. FB, NeoGEO, and SNES recognize the controller, but the buttons aren't assigned correctly again. Please help.

Where do I look to correct these issues. I have a xin-mo setup and I've downgraded the kernel, so the responsivity of the joystick is correct.
