No I was using nano. Just tried the above as well though which hasn't helped. I'm sure it's something simple. If only I knew what

Thanks. It is installed though. Just re-checked. The rc.local file shows it at 30% The /var/lib/alsa/asound.state shows the sound to be less than 100% But it still defaults to 100% on booting. Very odd
